Watch this!

When men say, "Watch this," they are often about to embark on some death defying feat. (ok, that's a huge generalization, but really, it's usually the guys, isn't it?). When Jesus performs his miracles, it's as though he's saying, "watch this! Let me show you what this Kingdom of God about which I've been talking, looks like." At baptism too, Jesus says to us, "watch this - see what it looks like to be washed in the blood of the Lamb." This Sunday, Jan 31, at 10 a.m. we look at the healing of the man who was lowered through the roof - the story is in Mark 2:1-12. We will also witness the baptism of Derk Adrian Askes. Please join us!

A vicious circle

* * * * * * * * * * ** * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ** * * * * *** The book of Judges is about a vicious circle; it's about people forgetting God, getting in trouble, God having compassion and sending a judge to save, and then, after the judge dies, it starts all over again. This Sunday we begin a mini-series on this troubling book of the bible. Left on our own, our compromises draw us away from God. But thanks be to God, the final judge, Jesus Christ, also came to save. His saving work broke the cycle - Jesus broke the power that sin and death held over us.

Hypocrisy in the church

Homosexuality is the current hot button in many of our churches. Check out this video for some insights from Tony Campolo.

Haiti response

Our churches are reaching out to respond to the tragedy in Haiti. Please pray and give - pray that as many people as possible will be rescued over these last few crucial hours since the quake struck on Tuesday. Pray for the injured, the homeless, and those who are grieving. You can also support the rescue and recovery efforts with your financial gifts. Our church will send your gifts to Haiti through the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, or you can send your gift to the CRWRC directly. See their website for info on their work in Haiti.

Holy Community

At first I wasn't so sure, but after saying it aloud a few times, ya, I think "Holy community" might have worked as one of Robin's exclamations. Try it-- "holy community, Batman!" [did you ever notice how Batman was really Robin's mentor, dispensing all kinds of fatherly advice to the young lad? check out some of their dialogue on line and you'll get a good laugh. But I digress...]. We get a little nervous claiming to be a holy community. But when we are in Christ, the true vine, we will bear much fruit. Yes, we really are a holy community. This Sunday, Jan 17, we look at the 7th and final of Jesus' 'I AM' statements.
ps there's a potluck lunch after the service. Bring something if you like, but do join us.

The Way

A road map can show us "the way" to get from point A to point B. But we can also talk about "the way" as being the means by which we make something happen. Jesus calls himself "The Way" (John 14:6). He is the way in both senses of the word - he is the way/route to our Father's house and he is the way/means by which we are reconciled to God and one another. Follow Jesus and you'll be on the right path. Join us this Sunday, Jan 10 at 10 a.m.

After Christmas

It's all over. Christmas 2009, New Year's Eve, it's all over. Did any of it make any difference? Has anything changed, other than our weight? When their brother died, Martha and Mary both said to Jesus, "If only you had been here..." Everything would have been different. Well, Jesus has been here. Has it made any difference? Let's think about that this Sunday, Jan 3, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.
