Why are you sleeping?

The obvious answer to that question is, "because I am tired." Going a little deeper, our bodies need sleep for purposes of cognitive restoration, hormone growth, and other such physiological housekeeping matters. But Jesus isn't inquiring about any of that when he asks his disciples, "Why are you sleeping?" Jesus knows that as they sleep, he embarks on the cosmic battle between good and evil. Jesus goes where they cannot go to do what they cannot do: he accepts the death penalty for our sin, and he restores us to God. All while we are "sleeping." This Sunday, Oct 24, 10 a.m.
